IDOT Regional Communications Backbone
Description
Installation of communications infrastructure regionwide, undertaken by the Illinois Department of Transportation and Illinois Central Management Services. This will connect major transportation, public safety and research entities in the region (e.g. Illinois Tollway, Chicago 911 center, county TMCs, University of Illinois in Chicago). Fiber installation is typically accomplished as a part of road construction or road reconstruction projects. Fiber capacity may also be provided through shared use agreements with public or private entities. Communication services for transportation management and control functions may also be provided by wireless technology. This project is ongoing.
