CTA Bus Radio Communications Replacement and Upgrade

Description

Project to replace current bus radio equipment with equipment that will integrate with the computer aided dispatch (CAD) system. It will replace much data transmitted over radio channels to the cell phone modem instead, freeing up radio channels for voice communication. The need for voice communication will be further increased because the dispatchers will be able to send text messages to the new on–board MDT. The on–board MDT was replaced with a different unit designed to give the operator location information about preceding buses and following buses allowing the operator to monitor and reduce bus bunching. This capability will also reduce the need for directions from supervisors. This capability will reduce bus bunching. GPS and radio connect replaced BECS. CAD is operating but radio bandwidth was limited. Replace vehicles in March 2016. Radios to be replaced. No funding is available now. Data channels converted to voice – 8 total in use now. Dynamic scheduling. These upgrades are ongoing.
